Eco-Conscious Rooftop Decking That Withstands the Test of Time

Rooftop spaces are increasingly valued for their ability to foster community, support wellness, and bring outdoor and green spaces into urban environments. But elevated decks must endure demanding conditions - from UV radiation to wind uplift and freeze/thaw cycles. That’s why architects prioritize rooftop decking systems that balance longevity with environmental responsibility.

Bison Innovative Products offers modular rooftop decking solutions engineered for performance and environmental responsibility. Designed for longevity, reusability, and material efficiency, Bison systems support sustainable building practices and align with programs such as LEED, SITES, and WELL - helping designers create durable rooftop environments built to endure.

Why Durability Matters in Rooftop Decking

Unlike traditional ground-level decks, rooftop installations must perform under intense environmental stress. Prolonged UV exposure can degrade surface materials, freeze/thaw cycles can cause cracking and expansion, and uplift from high winds presents structural risks.

Bison’s modular rooftop decking systems are engineered to address these challenges:

  • UV and weather-resistant surface materials that, when maintained properly, can mitigate the impact of extreme weather conditions
  • Pedestal-supported systems that promote drainage and airflow
  • Components that can be easily removed using the spline and FS1 fastener for wood tiles, which facilitates membrane inspections or repairs

Durability in this context isn’t just about resisting wear; it’s about ensuring safe, low-maintenance, and serviceable surfaces over decades. That long-term performance helps minimize waste and labor associated with frequent replacement.

Sustainability for Rooftop Decking

Bison is committed to using materials that are responsibly sourced and manufactured. Bison products are developed using industry best practices for sustainability.  This commitment includes:

  • Using aluminum and polypropylene components with recycled content
  • Offering wood tiles that meet FSC® certification standards
  • Modular wood tiles and pavers reduce on-site cutting and material waste

These features support credits in building standards like LEED, SITES, and WELL, which reward material transparency, durability, and efficient resource use.

And because Bison systems are modular, parts can be reused or replaced individually - extending the useful life of the deck and reducing end-of-life waste.

Case Study: Partners Healthcare

Multi-use deck in a Healthcare facility

At the Partners Healthcare headquarters in Somerville, MA, the design team used Bison ScrewJack® pedestals to develop a rooftop garden retreat and cafeteria lounge. The modular pedestals support a deck surface that can be leveled precisely, allow maintenance access to the waterproofing layer, and reduce waste during construction and over the lifetime of the deck. With its LEED Gold certification and emphasis on greenery, stormwater mitigation, and occupant comfort, this project exemplifies how a modular rooftop decking design can contribute to both aesthetic and performance goals.

Balancing Performance and Environmental Impact

Designing for sustainability doesn’t require architects to sacrifice function. Bison products undergo rigorous testing for:

  • Load capacity to handle foot traffic and amenities
  • Drainage performance to protect underlying membranes
  • Wind uplift resistance to meet rooftop safety standards (Bison testing resources)

Each system is engineered with a clear Factor of Safety, giving architects confidence in the deck’s long-term reliability under load. By combining tested durability with modular, recyclable components, Bison helps architects meet performance demands and contribute to environmental priorities.

Design That Lasts - And Respects the Environment

Choosing rooftop decking that endures is an investment in both performance and principle. With modular designs, recyclable components, and compatibility with green building frameworks, Bison Innovative Products helps ensure that your next rooftop space will stand the test of time.

Important Notice
Bison Innovative Products recommends that all rooftop deck systems should be installed by a licensed contractor with at least 2 years of proven experience. Plans/designs for a rooftop deck should be reviewed by a structural engineer before commencing construction. The roof must be able to safely carry the static and live load weights of the rooftop deck, and any amenities added along with the appropriate density of any insulation to resist crushing and damaging the waterproof membrane. Adding items such as hardscaping features, hot tubs, or pools to a rooftop deck requires additional guidance and oversight from an engineer. Property owners should research and abide by any building codes and other regulations to obtain the required permits prior to having a rooftop deck installed. Please read all product specifications posted on BisonIP.com to review all information prior to any installation
